Safeguarding Curriculum
At St Wilfrid’s Catholic Primary School, great importance is placed on identifying safeguarding learning opportunities within the curriculum.
Our broad and balanced curriculum gives pupils the chance to experience life in all its diversity, to acquire knowledge, understanding and skills that significantly impact personal development, behaviour and welfare and equip every child with the knowledge and skills required for personal safeguarding.
We use the Ten:Ten Resource ‘Life to the Full Plus’, as recommended by the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton, to support our teaching of Relationships, Sex and Health Education and PSHE. Life to the Full states:
“As children change and grow; their level of engagement will increase as they develop their social, moral, cultural and spiritual awareness and understanding. As Part of our spiral curriculum, the learning is embedded as children build upon what they have previously learned,”
We take advantage of the many opportunities available to explore safeguarding issues including values, personal rights, responsibilities and equal opportunities. We foster an open and safe learning environment in which pupils express their views, seek help, help others and ultimately are able to share their concerns with staff. We encourage children to think deeply about safeguarding matters and their own personal, physical and mental wellbeing supporting them to develop moral concepts that impact positively on safeguarding, promote British values and prevent radicalisation.
Throughout the curriculum there are planned opportunities to promote all forms of equality and foster greater understanding of and respect for people off all faiths (and those with no faith), races, genders, ages and disability. The promotion of equality of opportunity and diversity, for pupils and staff, helps to reduce forms of direct or indirect discriminatory behaviour.
Opportunities for sharing ideas, addressing concerns and promoting important values are embedded in our everyday practice and throughout our curriculum, these include personal safeguarding matters including anti- bullying, cyber bullying and British values including how these values are promoted in society.
In addition to following our safeguarding procedures, training is prioritised and revisited to ensure staff remain vigilant.
