St Wilfrid's Catholic Primary School Hope in God

Physical Education

Intent

At St Wilfrid’s, we believe that our physical education curriculum should inspire children to develop a lasting lifelong interest in physical activity, with the hope they continue to lead an active, healthy life. Through the development of fundamental skills, we hope to improve coordination, balance, agility and stamina to support the growth of the individual. Alongside the physical aspect of the curriculum, we also recognise the importance of educating the children, to cooperate, communicate and work as a team. Moreover, St Wilfrid’s will also enhance each child’s social and emotional skills, starting at the forefront of our six learning gateways alongside self-discipline, determination, resilience and teamwork, we understand the importance of these to support our children’s mental health. In addition, all children are offered to participate in a range of sporting opportunities in the locality, with activities both before and after school, helping children to apply their knowledge and skills in competitive activities.

Implementation

Our curriculum is adapted from the ‘Pepe’ Premier sport scheme of work, which provides a progression iterative framework of knowledge, understanding and skills, covering all areas of the National Curriculum including leading a healthy active lifestyle, fundamental skills and competition.

Starting at Early years where the continuous provision and outdoor area helps children develop both fine and gross motor skills which support each child to coordinate and build up strength. Across the school, PE is taught twice a week, in both the hall and our outside facilities. The ‘Pepe’ scheme of work is ambitious and effectively structured so that our children are experiencing a range of physical opportunities and essential skills, with the children developing their skills to work as a team. The knowledge and skills learnt in lesson can then be transferred to competitive fixtures, against other local schools.

Lesson plans and adult guides, provide subject knowledge content enabling teachers and adults to feel confident in the core knowledge and skills they are teaching including embedding the teaching of essential vocabulary.  Progress of our PE curriculum is measured against the knowledge and skills outline below on FFT outcomes and the record of coverage through our curriculum knowledge and skills grids. Our implementation intends to inspire pupils and practitioners to develop a passion for PE and to recognise the importance of physical activity, fundamental skills and teamwork skills with the awareness of the values of competition

Impact

Children will have clear enjoyment and confidence in PE so that they can then apply this to real life experiences. Through carefully planned and implemented learning activities pupils will develop the physical, social and emotional expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and interact in competitive situations.

Pupil’s growing skills and knowledge will best show the impact of our curriculum, with ongoing questioning and assessment opportunities to show progression in both knowledge and skills. Children will be able to think about skills, select appropriate skills and apply to the correct context. Reflecting on the skills they have developed as a learner within the unit within their foundation subjects books.  They will develop a positive outlook towards leading a healthy lifestyle and increase their physical strength and stamina. Other essential values will also be embedded into each lesson allowing the children to make connections between life skills and physical activity.
